# Configure resource and device types

> Manage tenant-level resource type registries—Vehicles, Trailers, custom types—and device types like Cameras, DataLoggers, and Air Tags in Servinix Settings.

# Configure resource and device types

Manage the tenant-level registry of resource types (vehicles, trailers, and custom units) and device types (cameras, dataloggers, GPS trackers, and more) from Settings → Resource & device types.

## Before you start

* You must have an Admin role.
* Go to **Settings → Resource & device types**.

The page has two sections: **Resource types** and **Device types**.

## Built-in types

The following types are built-in and cannot be deleted:

**Resource types:** `VEHICLE`, `EQUIPMENT`, `TECHNICIAN`

**Device types:** `CAMERA`, `DATALOGGER`, `AIR_TAG`, `MOBILE`, `PRO`, `TELEMATICS`

You can configure custom fields on built-in types but cannot remove them.

## Steps

### Add a custom resource type

1. Under **Resource types**, click **Add type**.
2. Enter a name and key for the new type.
3. Save.

The new type appears in the list alongside the built-in types, showing its **NAME**, **KEY**, **RECORDS** count, **SHOW IN LIVE** toggle, and a **FIELDS** link.

### Control Live map visibility

4. In the **SHOW IN LIVE** column for a resource type, toggle **Show in Live** on or off.

When on, resources of that type appear on the Live fleet map. Device types inherit Live visibility from their paired resource type.

### Configure custom fields on a type

5. Click **Configure** (or the **FIELDS** link) next to a resource type to open the custom fields editor.
6. Add, reorder, or remove fields as needed.

### Add a custom device type

7. Under **Device types**, click **Add type**.
8. Enter a name and key.
9. Save.

The device type appears in the list with its **NAME**, **KEY**, **RECORDS** count, and **FIELDS** link.

### Open Resources

10. Click **Open Resources** at the bottom of the page to navigate directly to the Resources view where you can assign types to individual records.

## Result / verify

* Custom types appear in the relevant section.
* Resources assigned to a type with **Show in Live** enabled appear on the Live fleet map.
* Custom fields defined on a type are available when editing resource records.

## Troubleshooting

* **Cannot delete a built-in type** — Built-in types (`VEHICLE`, `EQUIPMENT`, `TECHNICIAN`, etc.) are protected. Add custom types instead of modifying built-ins.
* **Type not appearing in Live** — Check that **Show in Live** is toggled on for that resource type.
